Dr. Lynne Garrett

Pianist and violinist Lynne Garrett has been involved with the Santa Maria Philharmonic Society since she arrived on the Central Coast in 2006. She joined the violin section of the orchestra and within a year joined the SMPS Board of Directors as the orchestra liaison. Soon after, she became a regular Board member and served on the Board until 2020. Over the years she has spearheaded several programs for young musicians, such as the Youth Showcase, the Masterclass for students, and the Scholarship program.

Dr. Garrett completed a BMus degree at UC Santa Barbara. During her residence in Santa Barbara, she also studied with the Hungarian pedagogue Dusi Mura. This significant music relationship continued until Ms. Mura’s death in 2009. She later earned the MM and DMA degrees in Piano Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY. She taught at Universities in Arkansas, Kansas, Texas, and California, but her move to the Central Coast brought a welcome return to private teaching in her own studio.

Over the past 17 years Dr. Garrett worked as a freelance violinist and pianist and established a prominent teaching studio. A passionate and dedicated teacher, her students have successfully competed in competitions locally and nationally. They have also been active in many SMPS events, benefiting from the many programs for young musicians.
